iOS 7 Madness, Android Widgets, and Quitting a Job You Hate

This week on the podcast we’re talking about a little bit of iOS news, why you should take another look at widgets on Android, and how to survive inside of Apple’s walled garden. Today, not having any widgets on your home screen is just asking to do things the hard way. Here are some of the best ways to use them productively.




  • A Month Inside Apple’s Walled Garden: It’s Not as Bad as You’d Think When you buy an Apple device, you agree to a bunch of restrictions. You don’t have as much control over your phone, third-party apps don’t have access to all the features that Apple’s software does, and they ban tons of other apps from their store. But if you agree to live under their roof you have the benefits of faster, super-integrated apps. So what’s better: going your own way, or life as Apple intended?

  • “I’m thinking about picking up some powerline adapters to “wire up” the ethernet in my apartment. Are there any drawbacks to using them in comparison to Wi-Fi or ethernet?”


    Wired is often better than wireless, but yes: powerline adapters do have some downsides. They’ll work better in some houses or apartments than others, and they’ll never be as fast as a really long ethernet cable. Our advice: Buy some with a good return policy and see how they work in your house and with your setup. Alternatively, you can actually install ethernet cabling in your wall for the best possible results.



  • Joey asks: “Three months ago I started a new job. I got a promotion on my first day of work, my company has probably spent at least $5000 on training for me, they have supplied me with a phone, a vehicle, and a brand new office. This is the job that I always wanted…and now that I have it I don’t know if I want it anymore. It’s very stressful, and I have not seen many results. The bad has been outweighing the good, and every day I work my anxiety is so bad that I have diarrhea. I don’t think I want this job anymore. I have read the “should I quit my job” checklist at Lifehacker and it definitely seems as though I may have made a wrong move by coming here, but the company’s investment and perks are making it hard for me to leave.”

    Your employer probably feels the same way you do: they invested a lot of time and money into training you, so they want to keep you happy and make their investment worthwhile! Talk to your manager or the boss and see what they can do about the situation before you quit. In the end, though, only you can decide whether it’s time to leave or not.


  • Jacob writes, “Is there anyway at all to get notifications for Facebook messages that end up in the “Others” inbox? I’ve gotten so many completely legitimate emails there that I don’t see for weeks, simply because I’m not looking at the “others” box, and I don’t get notifications.”

    You can move any message to your inbox and that thread will show up there from now on, and give you notifications. But if you haven’t received a message from that person before, there’s no real way to get notifications at the moment that we can find (if anyone knows of any, let us know!). The best thing you can do is get in the habit of checking your messages regularly.


  • “Any tips for someone who is about to root for the first time?”

    BACK UP OFTEN! Every time you flash something new, make a Nandroid backup. Before you root, familiarize yourself with all the rooting terms and frequently asked questions out there, too.


  • “What’s an easy way to make a podcast playlist? I want to line up shows like NPR and Lifehacker, so it plays one after the other. I’m using Downcast.

    We’ve actually done a guide on this before! You can set Downcast (and other apps) to automatically send podcast episodes to certain playlists when they download, so the playlist is always updated.

Please keep your questions as brief as possible. This means about 3-5 sentences for emails and 30-60 seconds for calls and videos. Your questions can be specific, but broader questions are generally better because they’ll apply to more people. For example, “how can I breathe new life into my old PDA?” is much better than “what can I do with an old HP iPAQ 210?” Either way, we look forward to hearing from you!
